smokeyThere’s no place in East Texas better than Lufkin in September. That’s when you will want to be at the 31st Annual Texas State Forest Festival presented by Brookshire Brothers, September 16-20, 2015 at the George H. Henderson, Jr. Exposition Center. More than 25,000 people attend this festival each year because this event offers fun for the entire family.

Keeping the festival fresh, new entertainment to excite all ages, Flippenout, Extreme Trampoline Show is unique and explosive. The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show is an action-packed Lumberjack Show featuring log rolling, log rolling dogs, chopping, sawing, axe throwing, dragster chainsaw and tree climbing. Also new to 2015, The Monkey Man! Jerry Brown and his monkey will mesmerize and delight you. Back by popular demand the Wild West Show and the Kids Celebration Show. Old favorites to the festival that will return once again this year include the Petting Zoo, Pony & Train Rides, and the Children’s Festival. Also, don’t miss the 44th Annual Hushpuppy Championships, East Texas Got Talent, a new car display, and the East Texas Cheerleading Championships.

Other events returning to the Texas State Forest Festival include the Pom Pon/Dance Team Competition and Century 21 Shows Carnival. There will be commercial booth exhibits, great food, live music, and local entertainment. The Pineywoods Purgatory — fall’s premier cycling event — offers four rides ranging from 25 to 102 miles that take you through Texas Forest Country’s best! Don’t let the first few miles fool you — the terrain is not without challenge! And to cap off your ride, the Angelina Expo and its cadre of volunteers and partners offer unmatched hospitality to riders and their guests who Visit Lufkin. It’s not just a ride; it’s a weekend experience you’ll want to make an annual event!

Why “Pineywoods Purgatory“?
An avid cyclist, Garland “Bubba” Parise, dreamed up the ride. He wanted Lufkin to have a ride that rivaled the “big ones” in Texas. With the help of his employer, Champion Paper Mill, his friends, and family, the Purgatory began in 1992 following a route Bubba and his friends often rode together. In 1993, at the age of 40, Parise died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart arrythmia. Pineywoods Purgatory’s continued success is a living memorial to Parise’s commitment to create the ultimate cycling experience through the Texas Forest Trail Region.

If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll understand the name “Purgatory” as you’re caught between the heaven of the East Texas countryside and the “hell” of having one more hill to climb!

11th Annual Jasper Air Show & Fly-In

Coming back to the show this year is the World War II Bomber “Devil Dog,” a B-25 from Georgetown, Texas. Internationally known aerobatics performer Skip Stewart will be flying his spectacular routine in the “Prometheus”.
World War II War Birds will fly the sky with “Reno” National Championship air racer, Stewart Dawson flying the Hawker Sea Fury during the show. Plus, Doctor Stan Musick, a crowd favorite will perform aerobatics in a Corsair from the Dixie Wing Commemorative Air Force, and Jimmy Fordham will fly aerobatic in a P-51 Mustang, from the Southern Heritage Air Foundation, in Tallulah, Louisiana. Other planes and pilots will include: Infamous, Randy Henderson and the Texas T-Cart, Jeremy Holt- Sky bolt, Steve “Lizard” Richmond and Pat “Glider” Tuckey – flying RV’s in a formation routine, and a Zero, and Kate “TORA” planes from the Commemorative Air Force.

The B-25, P-51, Corsair, Sea Fury, and “TORA” Zero planes will perform a re-enactment of a World War II bombing run.

The local chapter of the American Legion, Commemorative partner will pay special tribute honoring the 50th commemorative year of the Vietnam War thirty minutes prior the show both days.

The Re-Max sky –diving team, led by Al Saylor, will open up the show with their multi-jumper parachutes, and Ross Boyette will fly his remote controlled airplane for the crowd before the show.

There will be lots of food vendors with delicious food items, so come hungry. Mooney Fun Jumps will also be on location for the children, and Dream Big Entertainment, an authentic and fully restored A-7D Corsair II attack Fighter, will be there for a photo memory opportunity.

Gates open at 9:00 a.m. for static display on both days. On display will be a Super Cub, Helldiver, and more!

Arm bands are available at KJAS Radio in advance and at the gate: Prices are remaining the same as the last two years. Ages 13 and up- $15.00, ages 4 through 12 – $5.00, and children 3 and under are FREE!

The EAA Chapter 1356 of Leesville, LA will provide free “Young Eagles” rides for children ages 8 -17.

Due to FAA and DOT Regulations: Ice Chests, Large Bags, Back packs, Containers, Animals or Pets will not be allowed on Airport Grounds.
